Project Overview

  • GREAT SCRAP WOOD PROJECT – We had scrap pieces of our kids’ playset lying around the garage, and they were perfect for this project. The lumber doesn’t have to be perfect, since imperfections add to the charm.
  • STATEMENT PIECE – These large wood pieces stand out and add the perfect touch of decor to a front porch, patio, or fireplace. Customize the height to meet your needs.
  • BUDGET-FRIENDLY – There are many cost-saving options in this project, and you don’t have to use the same patterns shown here. The most basic option is to simply paint the blocks in red, white, and blue.

Supplies

Wood blocks, paint, and rope to make 4th of July fireworks decorations.

No Woodworking Tools? No problem.

Most home improvement stores like Lowe’s will cut wood free of charge, up to a limited number of cuts. You can also buy rope by the foot at the same stores.

Step 1: Sand the wood (optional)

Before you begin, consider sanding the wood. This helps the paint adhere better and removes any rough edges and splinters. Use a damp cloth to clean the wood after sanding.

Step 2: Apply 2-3 coats of base paint

Painting a base coat of chalk paint onto a wooden 4x4.

I recommend using a chalky white paint as a primer before painting the three wooden blocks.

One block will remain white, while the others will have either a red and white pattern or a blue and white pattern with stars.

Step 3: Decorate the navy and white block

You have a few options for decorating the navy block with stars. It all depends on your preference and the tools you have handy.

Option 1: Stencil the stars

Process steps for stenciling stars onto a wooden block to make 4th of July wooden fireworks.
  1. Use a Cricut to create star shapes with removable vinyl, or use pre-cut vinyl stickers to create a star pattern on each side of the block.
  2. (Optional) Use Mod Podge to seal each star. This will prevent the navy paint from bleeding underneath the stars. Let it dry for about 15-20 minutes before proceeding.
  3. Paint over the entire block with navy paint. You may need two coats of paint for full coverage. Let the paint dry completely (30-45 minutes).
  4. Gently peel away the vinyl stars to reveal the white star pattern.

Option 2: Decorate the block with white vinyl stars or paint markers

First, apply one to two coats of navy blue paint on the block. Then, decorate it with white vinyl stars or draw stars on the block with paint markers.

You can also buy small wooden stars to paint and glue to the block. So many possibilities!

Step 4: Paint the red striped block

Painting red stripes on a wooden fireworks decoration.

Paint red stripes on one of the blocks to resemble the red-and-white stripes on the U.S. flag. I used rubber bands to help keep my lines straight, since painter’s tape tended to lift the base coat of white paint.

Feel free to paint your stripes without any guides. They don’t have to be perfect!

Step 5: Add any embellishments (optional)

Feel free to add pretty ribbon or any extra details your heart desires!

I used my xTool M1 Ultra laser machine to whip up a wooden star to place on my white firecracker. After painting it red, I attached it to the block with jute twine.

I also used sandpaper to roughen the edges of the three blocks after they were painted. This gave a rustic farmhouse look to the fireworks decorations. I love the Americana vibe!

Step 6: Attach the rope “fuses”

Drilling a hole in the top of a wooden fireworks block to insert a rope.

It’s not necessary to drill holes in the wooden blocks to attach the rope, but I like the finished look.

Cut a short length of rope to become the fuse. (I used miter shears to cut through the thick rope because scissors didn’t cut it…literally). Then, use hot glue to attach the rope to the top of each block.

Gluing the "fuse" onto a wooden decorative fireworks using hot glue.

As a finishing touch, you can add a dab of brown paint to the top of the fuses to make them look more realistic.

Displaying Your Fireworks Decorations

These wood firecracker decorations are perfect for a table centerpiece, shelf decor, or porch decor. I love that you can make them as tall or short as you like to suit your needs.

If you plan to use them outdoors, be sure you choose paint that is suitable for outdoor decor. (Make sure the decorations aren’t exposed to direct sunlight or rain, if possible.)
