DIY Coastal Glass Jars
I’m a big fan of Oui yogurt jar upcycles, and this might be my favorite project to date! With Mod Podge and paint, I created pretty coastal glass jars that add the perfect beachy vibe to my home. Some of the techniques I used will surprise you.

I can’t bear to throw away a glass jar when there are so many possibilities for upcycling them! In the past, I’ve created pressed flower lanterns with yogurt jars, and I’ve also painted glass bottles to use as vases.
Since we had a small collection of shells from a recent beach vacation, I decided to put a coastal spin on these glass jar crafts.
Below, you’ll find three different techniques for decorating glass jars. You can customize them with any color scheme, too! Grab all supplies with the button below.

Project #1: Faux Sea Glass Craft
For the first technique, we’ll create a transparent faux seaglass effect. The results looks like stained glass, making it perfect for a DIY candleholder or trinket dish.
Supplies
- Oui yogurt jar (or similar)
- Mod Podge Matte
- Food Coloring
- Oui Jar Lids (optional)
- Shell beads
- Beading Cord
1. Mix Mod Podge and food coloring
Start by mixing a few tablespoons of Mod Podge with 1-2 drops of food coloring in a small cup. Stir well to combine the mixture, diluting it with a few drops of water to make sure it flows easily.
Use 2 drops of sky blue and 1 drop of lemon yellow food color to get a teal shade.
2. Pour mixture into glass jar and coat evenly

Swirl the paint inside a clean glass jar and continue turning the jar to fully coat the inside of the jar.
Once the jar is fully coated, turn it upside down onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
3. Bake jars or air-dry
Bake the jar in the oven at 200º F (93º C) for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until the paint has fully dried. Alternatively, you can let the jar air-dry upside down.
4. Embellish with shells or beads

If desired, embellish the jar with a bracelet of beads and seashells or ribbon. I used a stretchy beading cord to get a tight fit of shells, pearls, and beads around the rim of the jar.
Project #2: Painted Glass Jar with Shell Accent
Instead of using food coloring, you can also paint the exterior of a glass jar with acrylic paint. This results in a more opaque look.
Supplies
- Oui yogurt jar (or similar)
- Acrylic paint
- Pouncer brush
- Jute twine (optional)

For this simple craft, use a pouncer brush to apply paint to the outside of the glass jar. For a more textured look, dab off any excess paint before pouncing the brush.
Once dry, you can hot glue a shell on the front and attach jute twine or ribbon to complete the look.
Project #3: Glass Jar with Jute Twine Texture
Another fun way to add texture is using Mod Podge Texture Coat. This formula is much thicker than regular Mod Podge.
Supplies
- Oui yogurt jar (or similar)
- Mod Podge Texture Coat
- Jute twine
- Gloves (optional)
1. Coat the jute twine
Begin by dipping the jute twine or rope into the Mod Podge Texture Coat liquid. Then, wrap the cord around the glass jar starting at the top.

Gloves come in handy for this craft since it does get a bit messy. You could also use a doily or lace instead of jute twine. Anything that has texture works well with this Mod Podge formula.
Let the jar dry for 1-2 hours or until the cord is no longer damp.
2. Decorate the jar with shells or beads
After the jar is completely dry, you can add small shells around the rim or paint it. I think it would look great with an ombre painting technique using blue and teal shades of paint. Maybe I’ll try that next time!
Decorating with Coastal Glass Jars
You can buy bamboo lids that fit Oui yogurt jars for a finished look. These coastal jars would look adorable as summer home decor on a coffee table or shelf.

Use your decorative glass jars as trinket dishes or storage for buttons, needles, shells, cotton balls, and other knick-knacks.
