I love nothing more than upcycling items we would normally throw out with the trash. After my decoupage tin cans and pressed flower jars became reader favorites, I decided to try this fun glass painting project.
The wonderful part about painting glass jars is that you can create any aesthetic you please. I embellished mine with ribbon and buttons for a primitive, farmhouse look, but you could use neutral colors and add faux florals for an elegant wedding or bridal shower.
For the pumpkin and leaf shapes, I created quick decals with my Cricut machine, but I’ve also included links to buy pre-cut stencils online. The “window” created with these cutouts transforms the glass jars into unique candle holders.
I hope you enjoy decorating with these painted mason jars and customizing them in your own style. For more painting techniques, check out my coastal glass jars.
How to Make Painted Mason Jars for Fall
You’ll find many techniques for painting mason jars. For this project, I used acrylic paints with a matte finish, but feel free to substitute spray paint or chalk paint.
Supplies

- Glass mason jars (or upcycled food jars)
- Acrylic paint, chalk paint, glass paint, or spray paint
- Mod Podge (optional)
- Removable vinyl or sticker decals
- Cricut machine – Joy, Explore, or Maker (optional)
- Foam brushes
- Decorative ribbon or twine
Note: Spray paint provides a smooth, uniform finish but requires a well-ventilated work environment.
Clean and prep the mason jars
If using a glass food jar, be sure to remove any sticky residue from the label. I used pasta sauce jars and soaked them in hot water before scrubbing the label off.
You may also want to clean the surface with rubbing alcohol before applying the stencil.
Size and cut the decals (for Cricut)
To make my leaf and pumpkin decals, I used elements from my fall SVG bundle. I’ll soon share a tutorial to make a puff vinyl t-shirt using the same designs. They are so versatile!
I cut the design on removable vinyl from Dollar Tree, and it worked perfectly. You can also buy this removable vinyl online.
No Cricut? Try these window clings instead.
Apply the decals and paint the jars

- Place the sticker decal in the center of the jar, and seal the edges with a layer of Mod Podge. This will give a cleaner design after painting.
- Apply 2-3 coats of paint around the entire glass jar, waiting about 20 minutes between coats. Typically, I found three coats gave the best coverage.
- Carefully remove the sticker from the jar, working gently around any curves or fine details.
- Decorate the jars with jute twine, ribbon, or buttons around the rim for a finishing touch.
I used three fall colors to create a set of coordinating jars: green, terra cotta, and yellow. The ribbons came from a jelly roll with a mix of fall colors. I can’t wait to craft more with these homespun fabric ribbons!

I love the simple farmhouse style of these fall painted mason jars. To turn them into luminaries, I added some pebbles to the bottom and an LED votive candle. These will make the perfect autumn accent on my breakfast room sideboard.
