Air Dry Clay: Basic Tips

Compared to other types of clay, air-dry clay is very beginner-friendly. Since it dries naturally, you won’t need an oven or kiln to cure it. Polymer clay, on the other hand, is an oven-bake clay that comes in various colors.

Below I’m sharing 20 of the best air dry clay ideas to spark your creativity. Before getting started, here are some basic tips to keep in mind.

Colors

My favorite brand of clay comes in white, stone, and terracotta colors, but you can paint your finished pieces with any color you desire. I prefer starting with white air dry clay and painting my designs once the clay has dried.

Sculpting techniques

As you’ll see below, there are countless craft ideas and techniques to explore with air-dry clay.

  • You can use a base structure (called an armature) made of foil or wire.
  • Stamps and molds also work well to create unique shapes and textures.
  • You can also do “freehand” sculpting to create figurines much like you would with Play-Doh.

Air Dry Clay Supplies

*Note: Crayola air dry clay is another popular brand that is particularly easy for children to sculpt. You can also buy clay kits that include tools, paints, and varnishes.

The clay will dry out as you work, so I also like keeping a small dish of water nearby to moisten my fingertips.
