Welcome to the Embracing Fall Home Tours

One of my favorite aspects of running a home and garden website is collaborating with fellow bloggers. It gives me all the warm fuzzies!

This month, Amber from Follow the Yellow Brick Home has organized a fabulous collaboration called Embracing Fall Home Tours!

Did you come here by way of Michelle at Thistle Key Lane? She’s one of my favorite ladies in the blogosphere. We have very similar tastes in decor, and I adore her classic, timeless style.

However you landed here, I’m so glad to see you!

If you live in cooler climes, I encourage you to grab a cup of hot apple cider as we begin our tour. If you live where I do, I encourage you to grab a fan and some iced tea…

5 Fall Porch Decorating Ideas

Recently, I shared early fall decorating ideas for the living room and dining room. Today, I’m focusing on the outdoors with fall porch decor.

Front porch fall decorating ideas with grapevine wreath on black door, DIY wooden sign, pumpkins, mums and a fall mat

Since I have a porch that is deep but not wide, I’m sharing tips that will work with porches of any size, large or small.

Hopefully, this will give the porch-challenged some realistic #porchgoals this season.

Tip #1: The Fall Grapevine Wreath

I have a confession to make…

I love DIY wreaths. (You can see my spring wreath tips and holiday knock-off wreath as proof.)

HOWEVER, I did not make this wispy grapevine wreath. [Gasp!]

Whether you make your own or buy one off the shelf, a front door wreath with plenty of texture helps to ground the whole front porch ensemble.

The variety of gourds, leaves, burlap and velvety cattails in this number made me stick it in my cart and guard it like a hawk while I was shopping.

(C’mon, I’ve seen you do the same thing before.)

This wreath set the stage to decorate with rich, traditional fall colors like yellow, red and rust orange.

Tip #2: Mums Galore

Mums for fall front porch surrounded by small pumpkins

Mum’s the word, friends! I believe mums were created to sit on fall porches. It might be a scientific fact.

When working with a narrow or small porch, it helps to pair 2-3 mums of different colors and textures.

I chose to include one “statement” 3-gallon yellow mum and a smaller red Pelee mum for this reason.

Don’t limit yourself to just the nurseries or home improvement stores when shopping. I found my mums at a local grocery store for a fraction of the price!

Having a rustic olive bucket or wood barrel planter as a container also helps create more visual interest on your front porch.

Tip #3: Gorgeous Gourds

It seems the assortment of pumpkins and gourds available only increases from year to year.

Having a variety of pumpkins on your porch really helps to activate the fall season.

If loving pumpkins is wrong, I don’t wanna be right, you know?

I adore the diversity of stems on these little pumpkins, too! (The matching orange minis are a little nod to my twin boys. It’s always nice to have a personal touch.)

Tip #4: The Welcome Mat

Changing out the front porch mat with a festive fall design always helps tie your decor together.

Normally, I have a monogrammed coco mat sitting in front of our door, but I swapped it out for this cute farmhouse truck mat.

If your mat is slightly small (as mine was), you can layer a larger mat underneath in buffalo plaid or another complementary design.

Tip #5: Risers to Create Height

Can I share something with you? I see photos of New England brownstones with pumpkins and mums layered on a series of steps leading up to a stately door, and I think…”Wouldn’t that be lovely someday?”

Alas, I have one step on my porch, and I suspect many of you are step-less, too.

When you don’t have steps, you can get creative with risers!

To prop up my yellow mums and create more height, I used a little red stool that my hubby made when I was (very) pregnant with the twins. (I needed a little help hoisting myself into bed.)

Below, I’ll link to a few risers you can buy (and reuse) to create varying height on your own fall front porch.

  6. Crissy, Your fall porch is lovely! I like simplicity and yours is perfect, not overly cluttered! We have a stoop at our condo, with just an itsy bitsy little cover, but I always do what I can to make it as welcoming as yours is. Enjoy the rest of October!

    1. Thank you, Carol. Yes, sometimes I think it’s better to have a smaller space to work with…there’s less risk I’ll accumulate things that I’ll have to store later! I appreciate the kind words. It’s been fun touring with you and getting to know you better. Happy October!

  7. I have been looking forward to reading your post and you didn’t disappoint! Your fall porch looks so inviting and your tips for styling a porch are spot on. The wreath that you purchased is gorgeous and why DIY when then one is so pretty? Plus, if you bought all of the things needed to make this wreath, it would cost way more that what you spent on this one. Using a riser is a good tip for someone who has no steps to decorate. It all looks so pretty and I so much enjoyed reading your post.

    1. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments, Paula! You’re absolutely right about the wreath. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve decided to create my own decor only to spend more money than buying something off the shelf! I’ve gotten better about that over the years. You start to learn when it’s good to buy vs. DIY.

I always enjoy hopping with you and seeing your exceptional vintage decor. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. Simply beautiful fall front porch with great styling tips! Love the idea to use a stool as a riser to create the illusion of stairs. Your mum colors are so gorgeous and I love your pumpkins and gourds. NO…I don’t wanna be right either! Ha! I love pumpkins!

  9. Mums and pumpkins are such a natural for fall porches, aren’t they? Great idea to put things on risers if you don’t have steps to arrange them on. Your doormat is just perfect for welcoming guests from now through Thanksgiving! It was great to hop with you!

    1. Thanks, Chloe. I wish we had more steps or a wider porch to work with, but it’s fun to have the challenge of getting creative. I loved seeing your festive porch as well! Can I borrow a few steps? Ha!

Thanks for stopping by. This has been a great hop!

    1. Thank you, Barbara! Nothing usually gets by the twins. In fact, they are usually trying to offer some props for my “blog posts.” It’s a family affair! I so appreciate you stopping by. 🙂

  10. I totally would have snatched up that wreath too! So cute. Love all the tips. Can you tell me how to keep mums blooming and alive. I buy them every year and after one week, they look like brown sticks. I hate that and my black thumbs. Love how your fall porch turned out. Makes me finally want to get outside and do mine – just in time to take it all down and figure out Christmas!

    1. Hee hee. Thanks, Cindy! I wish I had a list of tips for you about mums. My tip is to take photos of them as soon as you buy them. Ha! Honestly, I think it’s a matter of letting them get some morning sun and afternoon shade. (Not so easy, I know.) Usually, my fail is overwatering. I hear you should wait until the top soil is a bit dry before watering. I totally hear you on putting up and taking down decorations this time of year!

  11. Crissy your front porch is so welcoming. Love the pumpkins and mums. I have a small porch and need inspiration. Thanks for sharing your porch decor with us. Happy October!

    1. Thanks, Terrie! While I’d love to have a sprawling porch, sometimes I think having a simple and easy porch is a good thing. I look forward to checking out your post on the tour as well. Happy fall to you!
