Front Porch Fall Decorations to Celebrate the Season
For quick and easy fall decorating ideas for the front porch, you’ve come to the right place! Every porch space is unique, but I’m sharing five elements anyone can incorporate this autumn season.

5 Fall Porch Decorating Ideas
Recently, I shared early fall decorating ideas for the living room and dining room. Today, I’m focusing on the outdoors with fall porch decor.
Since I have a porch that is deep but not wide, I’m sharing tips that will work with porches of any size, large or small.
Hopefully, this will give the porch-challenged some realistic #porchgoals this season.
Tip #1: The Fall Grapevine Wreath
I have a confession to make…
I love DIY wreaths. (You can see my spring wreath tips and holiday knock-off wreath as proof.)
HOWEVER, I did not make this wispy grapevine wreath. [Gasp!]
Whether you make your own or buy one off the shelf, a front door wreath with plenty of texture helps to ground the whole front porch ensemble.
The variety of gourds, leaves, burlap and velvety cattails in this number made me stick it in my cart and guard it like a hawk while I was shopping.
(C’mon, I’ve seen you do the same thing before.)
This wreath set the stage to decorate with rich, traditional fall colors like yellow, red and rust orange.
Tip #2: Mums Galore
Mum’s the word, friends! I believe mums were created to sit on fall porches. It might be a scientific fact.
When working with a narrow or small porch, it helps to pair 2-3 mums of different colors and textures.
I chose to include one “statement” 3-gallon yellow mum and a smaller red Pelee mum for this reason.
Don’t limit yourself to just the nurseries or home improvement stores when shopping. I found my mums at a local grocery store for a fraction of the price!
Having a rustic olive bucket or wood barrel planter as a container also helps create more visual interest on your front porch.
Tip #3: Gorgeous Gourds
It seems the assortment of pumpkins and gourds available only increases from year to year.
Having a variety of pumpkins on your porch really helps to activate the fall season.
If loving pumpkins is wrong, I don’t wanna be right, you know?
I adore the diversity of stems on these little pumpkins, too! (The matching orange minis are a little nod to my twin boys. It’s always nice to have a personal touch.)
Tip #4: The Welcome Mat
Changing out the front porch mat with a festive fall design always helps tie your decor together.
Normally, I have a monogrammed coco mat sitting in front of our door, but I swapped it out for this cute farmhouse truck mat.
If your mat is slightly small (as mine was), you can layer a larger mat underneath in buffalo plaid or another complementary design.
Tip #5: Risers to Create Height
Can I share something with you? I see photos of New England brownstones with pumpkins and mums layered on a series of steps leading up to a stately door, and I think…”Wouldn’t that be lovely someday?”
Alas, I have one step on my porch, and I suspect many of you are step-less, too.
When you don’t have steps, you can get creative with risers!
To prop up my yellow mums and create more height, I used a little red stool that my hubby made when I was (very) pregnant with the twins. (I needed a little help hoisting myself into bed.)

Mums and pumpkins are such a natural for fall porches, aren’t they? Great idea to put things on risers if you don’t have steps to arrange them on. Your doormat is just perfect for welcoming guests from now through Thanksgiving! It was great to hop with you!

I totally would have snatched up that wreath too! So cute. Love all the tips. Can you tell me how to keep mums blooming and alive. I buy them every year and after one week, they look like brown sticks. I hate that and my black thumbs. Love how your fall porch turned out. Hee hee.Thanks, Cindy! I wish I had a list of tips for you about mums. My tip is to take photos of them as soon as you buy them. Ha! Honestly, I think it’s a matter of letting them get some morning sun and afternoon shade. (Not so easy, I know.) Usually, my fail is overwatering. I hear you should wait until the top soil is a bit dry before watering. I totally hear you on putting up and taking down decorations this time of year!
